Manufacturer: GSK
Pharmaceutical name: Allopurinol
Pack: 10 pills (100 mg)
Zyloric is indicated for the treatment of gout, elevated uric acid levels resulting from certain cancer treatments, and kidney stones. It contains allopurinol, categorized as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Its mechanism involves decreasing the body's uric acid production. Elevated uric acid can lead to gout flares or kidney stones. Zyloric is intended to prevent gout attacks rather than to treat them once they arise.
Zyloric functions by reducing the amount of uric acid produced in the body. It will not relieve a gout attack that is already in progress, nor does it cure gout; instead, it aids in preventing future gout attacks. However, Zyloric is effective only after consistent use over several months. It will continue to help prevent gout attacks as long as you take it regularly.
Zyloric is also indicated for preventing or addressing other medical issues that may arise due to excessive uric acid levels in the body. These issues include certain types of kidney stones or other renal complications.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you have an allergy to allopurinol or other medications. Additionally, let them know about any prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking. Be sure to highlight any of the following: amoxicillin; ampicillin; anticoagulants ('blood thinners') like warfarin; chemotherapy agents such as cyclophosphamide and mercaptopurine; chlorpropamide; diuretics ('water pills'); immunosuppressive drugs such as azathioprine and cyclosporine; other gout medications like probenecid and sulfinpyrazone; and tolbutamide. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your medication doses or monitor you closely for adverse reactions.
Notify your doctor if you have or have had kidney or liver disease or heart failure. Also, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using Zyloric, contact your doctor.
Be aware that Zyloric may cause drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you are certain of how this medication affects you. Consult your doctor regarding the safe consumption of alcoholic beverages while taking Zyloric, as alcohol may reduce its effectiveness.
